The Sacred and the Profane: I’m Drawn to Both

I’m not sure what it says about me that I love both of these videos shown below — both the sacred and the profane. Perhaps that I’m an intellectually complex person. Perhaps that I don’t know who I am anymore, because I grew up Southern Baptist and now lean closer — but not quite over the line yet — to atheism. Or perhaps that I don’t like labels even though I pay attention to who I am.

Sacred (if you’re using a feed reader and don’t see the video below, click here):

Profane (if you’re using a feed reader and don’t see the video below, click here):

Do you have any dichotomies like this?

Lionel Richie Is Still “Mighty, Mighty”

I spent most of my teen weekends when I wasn’t dating riding around Crystal Springs., Miss., in my big green Thunderbird with my friend, Kathy M. — she of the perpetual tan, tiny frame, and endearing woodpecker laugh. While we were trying to find places that would sell us beer or Boone’s Farm wine, we were looking at the cute boys riding around too or gossiping about the other girls we saw. We wore out many an eight-track tape, singing along with LTD’s “We Party Hearty” or “Brick House” by the Commodores.

So imagine my delight at finding a clip from a German talk show of Lionel Richie sucking up some helium and then singing. This one’s for you, Kathy!
