You reeked of Scotch and innuendo, and you liked being a bleary-eyed enigma shrouded in cigar smoke. In class, you taught, “Don’t complain, and don’t explain.” Your cryptic instructions were legendary, the murky unsaid implying secret depths. But sometimes I think mystery covers nothing much at all.

• My 18yo just called: She’s moving out today to live with girlfriend in GA and will go to school there. Throwing away $35K in scholarships. #
• To say that I’m stunned is the very, very least of it. I’m so sad she didn’t feel she could tell me this. And angry at the sneakiness. #
