Success Smells Sweet for Stinky Art
Posted on 22 May 2008
I’ve known my older daughter is artistically talented ever since she drew on her bedroom wall with a hot pink highlighter when she was 5. I’ve known she looks at the world a little differently ever since she cut the cloth face off my old Raggedy Ann doll — “to make a mask, Mommy” — when she was about 11. Last year, she painted a mural in her sister’s castle-themed bedroom that looks just like an arched stone window. And Monday night at a high school awards ceremony, she took top honors in her senior art class for her bright, fanciful drawing of a high-topped sneaker.
I am SO proud of her!
And it doesn’t diminish that pride one bit just because I had to stifle giggles when I saw the title of her composition faithfully reproduced in the evening’s program. They didn’t actually announce it in that level of detail, which is a good thing. Because I can only imagine the pinkness of her cheeks if she had walked across the stage to the sound of this:
“And first-place honors in Art II go to Miss Virginia McCullough, for … ‘Foot Odor’?”

Congratulations to your BEAUTIFUL and TALENTED daughter on her achievement. The drawing on walls and such remind me of me. Sometimes, we’re just frustrated artists exploring.
Oh my goodness, that is WONDERFUL. What an absolutely beautiful piece. That girl of yours is definitely going places.
